The irrepressible Auro, modern reincarnations of the jilted lover and the double ego twins, the popular macho righteous cop in disguise or the intelligent idiots? Who will win the best film award at IIFA 2010 Colombo?
Even as the day of revelation moves closer, the debate on the potential winner of the ‘Best Film’ award in IIFA awards 2010 is heating up. Will it be a campus comedy or a masala action thriller? Will the jury praise the Tarantino-ish wizardry of Vishal Bhardwaj or Anurag Kashyap’s psychedelic adaptation of a timeless classic will run away with all the glory; answers to these key questions will only be revealed on the 5th of June. Before that happens, is there any harm in sizing up these pop-classics against each other?
The man who gave us the Munna-Circuit duo, scored once again with 3 Idiots. By far the biggest blockbuster of the year in terms of BO collections, Rajkumar Hirani pulled off this campus comedy with élan, as Aamir, Sharman and Madhavan made people laugh-out-loud and shed copious tears in a small matter of 3 hours. 3 Idiots pocketed 8 of the total 14 technical award this year and stands more than a strong chance.
Salman Khan Starrer Wanted dished out masala fare and has rode on the cheers and adulation of the proverbial “front seat” audience to walk into the nominations. Paa on the other hand is a sincere, sensitive film, where a 65-year old Big B plays the character of a 13 year old, while his real life son plays his on-screen father. Many hearts were wrenched; innumerable stings were touched by Auro.
Kaminey and DevD, despite being huge commercial success, offer something different to the dominant discourse of Bollywood. Kaminey fuses the classic 70s idea of feuding twin siblings with gangsta’ lore of Tarantino land; the outcome is pretty much summed up Dhan Ta Nan Nan. DevD retold the oft recounted story of the jilted lover who hits the bottle before kicking the bucket. But he did that in his inimitable style; Abhay Deol’s brooding performance, Amit Trivedi’s eclectic music and a smart screenplay makes this a modern classic.
Best Film nominees:
3 Idiots – Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Wanted – Boney Kapoor
Kaminey – Vishal Bharadwaj and Ronnie Screwvala
Dev D – Anurag Kashyap and Ronnie Screwvala
Paa – Sunil Manchanda and AB Corp
